What to Do and Not Do in Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning your carpets at home might be a difficult task to undertake. There are many different carpet cleaning chemicals available, numerous different sorts of carpet materials to choose from, and many different types of stains and concerns to contend with.

That is why we have developed a list of dos and don’ts for carpet cleaning. You can use these dos and don’ts as a guideline for any carpet cleaning at home, ensuring that your carpet is cleaned safely and effectively whenever necessary.

Remember to hoover the carpet.

Always hoover the carpet first to remove any dirt, sand, or grit that may have accumulated. If you attempt to clean your carpet using carpet cleaning chemicals without first vacuuming it, you may have a much dirtier carpet. It will be much easier and more effective to clean if the carpet is first vacuumed.

Pre-spraying is required

Pre spray

Whenever possible, use a pre-spray before applying any other products. Pre-sprays operate by allowing some of the dirt in the carpet to be released, allowing the chemicals applied later to be far more effective. Pre-spray with the appropriate strength for the strength you desire and the type of carpet material you are working with. Allow the solution to soak in before brushing the area to remove any remaining dirt.

Do not use the chemicals that are targeted.

Do use specific chemicals to address the issue you are experiencing with your carpet. For example, make sure to use stain remover formulated explicitly for coffee and tea stains. To eliminate water-based stains from your carpet when cleaning it on a general basis, use a basic all-purpose solution designed for carpet cleaning.

If you cannot locate the best answer for your problem, or if you have just caused a stain and need to deal with it right away, the next best solution is to use merely water to clean it. The most effective way to remove a stain is to blot it with water rather than scrape it gently. Using the inappropriate chemical for your problem will lead the stain to get more embedded in the carpet fibres.

Do not wet the carpet too much.

You must use the right amount of solution specified on the bottle’s label. Please make sure that you do not over-wet the carpet since it will make removing the dirt or stain more difficult.

Don’t use too much water when you are doing carpet cleaning.

Water is required for some hot water extraction processes, which might amount to several hundred gallons. Water damage can be catastrophic if it is not carefully removed and dried as soon as possible. According to the findings of a study commissioned by DPM Floor and Upholstery Care, typical hot water extraction can result in a 150 per cent rise in the growth of microbiological content, resulting in a negative influence on the cleanliness and health of space. Beyond creating mildew and dry rot, over-saturating the carpet with water while washing can weaken the backing system and cause seams to become loose.

Avoid replacing the feet of wood or metal furniture on wet carpet.

Once the carpet has been cleaned, do not immediately place furniture with wood or metal feet back on it. Please make sure that it has had time to dry before continuing. It is possible that putting furniture on a wet carpet after it has been removed will cause the wood’s colour to bleed into the carpet, creating a stain, or that metal feet will rust.

It is critical to provide sufficient drying time for your carpet to ensure that you have the cleanest and most stain-free rug possible. If you cannot wait for the carpet to dry, place folded up tin foil beneath the legs of the furniture to protect it.

Do not skip over the dilution rate.

One of the most common mistakes individuals make when cleaning their carpets at home is to use more solutions than necessary. It is commonly believed that applying additional solutions will aid in the removal of dirt/stains more quickly and effectively. This isn’t the case at all. Instead of attracting dirt after washing, applying more than the dilution rate draws dirt, causing your carpet to become filthy much faster. When it comes to carpet cleaning, the saying “less is more” applies.

Don’t—Make the mistake of using the wrong type of chemistry for the stain or area.

Spills happen everywhere, from wine and coffee to paint and oil. The type of stain should dictate the technique and chemical you use in cleaning it. A chemical formula specifically created to eradicate odour-causing impurities is required to remove an organic stain formed by urine or vomit, whilst an oil and grease stain necessitates using a water-based and nonflammable formula to remove the stain caused by grease. On the other hand, facility managers frequently utilize multipurpose cleaning chemicals to treat all spills and spots, resulting in permanent stains.

Do—Incorporate low-moisture encapsulation into your design.

In addition to helping to maintain a consistent appearance, the low-moisture encapsulation technology also helps to lengthen carpet lifecycles while reducing drying time to as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Regular use will help remove soil particles from the carpet, prevent re-soiling, and lengthen the duration between wet extractions by a factor of two or three. When used in conjunction with a comprehensive carpet cleaning program, low-moisture encapsulation can result in cleaner carpet and a more comfortable indoor environment overall.
